Dürkheim Wurstmarkt - the world's biggest wine festival
Wine takes centre stage once more at the 593rd Dürkheim Wurstmarkt wine festival on the 2nd and 3rd weekend of September. What began as a medieval pilgrimage is now the world's biggest wine festival and the Palatinate's most popular celebration, with over 600,000 visitors and over 200,000 litres of wine flowing from bottle to glass. The name 'Wurstmarkt' means 'sausage market' but now it's all about wine.
The German section of the Elbsandsteingebirge mountains is known as Saxon Switzerland - a landscape of dramatic rock formations that is a climber's dream and now very popular with hikers too. But in among the unspoilt scenery and breathtaking crags there are also plenty of paths suitable for people with restricted mobility.
Right now this unique landscape is at its very best: millions of stunning purple heather bushes set off by green juniper and pines. Now is the time for hikers, cyclists and Nordic walkers to experience this natural spectacle. Carriages and covered wagons ply the sandy paths, moorland sheep bleat as they graze and the air is filled with the sweet fragrance of flowers warmed by the sun.
Ahr valley wine region - in the valley of the red grapes
Indulged by the sun and largely untouched by rain - the mild climate, the romantic river and picturesque wine terraces attract lovers of nature, food and wine to Germany's third-smallest winegrowing region. Anyone who appreciates good wine should make a pilgrimage to the Ahr valley, lap up the relaxed lifestyle, chill out, enjoy being with friends and discover everything the region has to offer.
Saar-Hunsrück Trail - unspoilt, a dream for hikers
Boots were made for walking on this wonderful trail! The Saar-Hunsrück Trail is over 180km in length and has a unique natural charm. It winds its way through the idyllic Hunsrück and Hochwald landscapes, ageless as if it had been there since time began, perfect for discovering the ceramics town of Mettlach on the Saar Bow, the Roman town of Trier and the gem town of Idar-Oberstein.
